Juventus vs Man City predictions

Juventus and Manchester City supporters have been accustomed to success over the past couple of decades but the European giants began the week lying 19th and 17th in the Champions League table.

Juve won nine straight Serie A titles between 2012 and 2020 while City kicked off the 2024-25 campaign in pursuit of a seventh Premier League crown in eight seasons.

Both teams are struggling domestically and in Europe but the Citizens have at least been starting matches strongly in the Champions League and they are worth backing to establish a half-time lead in Turin.

Pep Guardiola's influence on modern football is undeniable and Chelsea and Arsenal, two of the three clubs above City in the Premier League, are coached by his former assistants Enzo Maresca and Mikel Arteta.

Juve manager Thiago Motta played under Pep at Barcelona and, like his old boss, is enduring a challenging campaign.

Motta steered Bologna to Champions League qualification last season and his Juve side kept seven clean sheets in their first eight Serie A matches this term.

However, injuries to key centre-back Bremer and left-back Juan Cabal have undermined that solid foundation and Motta is struggling to get a tune out of the Old Lady's attacking players.

That lack of fluency has been highlighted by a run of seven draws in nine games including goalless stalemates against Milan in Serie A and Aston Villa in the Champions League.

Juventus had to come from 2-0 down to earn a point against Motta's former club Bologna on Saturday, having been held to a 1-1 draw at lowly Lecce in their previous game.

None of Juve's recent stalemates have been as dramatic as City's 3-3 draw against Feyenoord on matchday five of the Champions League, when they inexplicably blew a 3-0 lead in the final 20 minutes at the Etihad Stadium.

Since a 1-0 home win over bottom club Southampton on October 26, the Citizens have won one, drawn two and lost six of their nine matches in all competitions – comfortably the worst run of Pep's managerial career.

Unlike Juventus, however, they have the attacking talent to turn things around, especially with Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden fit again.

City were leading at half-time in three of their last four Champions League games, against Slovan Bratislava, Sparta Prague and Feyenoord, and took a fourth-minute lead through Foden away to Sporting before capitulating to a 4-1 defeat.

Juve, in contrast, have scored just one first-half goal in their last six matches and City look worth backing to take the early initiative in a clash of two faltering giants.
