Match preview

Juventus know the pitfalls of the Champions League knockout stages all too well but they can sidestep another banana skin at the expense of Villarreal.

The Old Lady haven’t enjoyed much luck in Europe recently, losing four of their last five knockout ties and bowing out at the last-16 stage in the last two seasons.

That track record might put some punters off backing Juve but their current run of form reads eight wins in their last 12 matches in all competitions, and that suggests they can buck the trend.

They’ve also won six in a row at home in the Champions League and even though there was little between the teams in a first leg that finished 1-1, Juventus’s class should tell at home.

Villarreal won twice away from home in the group stage but have only ever won four times on their travels in the Champions League, while domestically they have won three away games all season.

Should top scorer Gerard Moreno miss out again with a calf injury, the Yellow Submarine lack a threat to hurt a Juve defence boosted by the return of Giorgio Chiellini.
