Inter vs Arsenal predictions

Arsenal's last Champions League trip to Inter ended in a glorious 5-1 victory for the Gunners in November 2003 but defences are expected to dominate this week's clash at San Siro.

It has been a difficult couple of weeks for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, whose side have taken only one point from three Premier League matches against Bournemouth, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Sporting director Edu, who scored the fourth goal in that 2003 rout of Inter, unexpectedly resigned on Monday and the Gunners face another testing top-flight trip to Chelsea this weekend.

The imminent return from injury of captain Martin Odegaard is a boost for Arteta although the Norwegian playmaker is unlikely to be rushed back into the starting line-up.

Arsenal have struggled to create chances in Odegaard's absence, mustering only five shots on target in away defeats at Bournemouth, where William Saliba was sent off after half an hour, and Newcastle as well as the 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool.

The Gunners' lofty defensive standards have dropped a little in this season's Premier League although they have kept three clean sheets in their first three Champions League matches.

Their European campaign began with a 0-0 draw away to Atalanta but they needed a brilliant penalty save from David Raya to hold off last season's Europa League winners.

Inter, champions of Italy last term and odds-on to retain the Scudetto in 2024-25, also kicked off their Champions League bid with a goalless draw, impressing in an away stalemate against trophy favourites Manchester City.

The Nerazzurri shared a spectacular 4-4 draw with Juventus in Serie A last month but they rarely offer up that many chances and, like Arsenal, are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League.

A 4-0 home win over Red Star Belgrade on matchday two was followed by a 1-0 victory against Young Boys in Switzerland, where Inter's top scorer Marcus Thuram struck in the 93rd minute.

Three of Inter's last four wins in all competitions were by a 1-0 margin while Arsenal beat Paris St-Germain 2-0 and Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0, courtesy of an own goal from Shakhtar keeper Dmytro Riznyk, in their last two Champions League matches.

The Gunners lost both of last season's away games in the knockout stage by a 1-0 scoreline, at Porto and Bayern Munich, and under 1.5 goals is worth a bet when two of the competition's best defences face off in Milan.
