Girona vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool have the last 16 of the Champions League in their sights and can all but guarantee that fate by nicking a low-scoring win at the Estadi Montilivi.

Hosts Girona, without a win in four and languishing in mid-division in La Liga, are cutting little ice in their debut European campaign but should be solid enough to avoid a hiding.

However, even allowing for the inevitable tweak or two from Arne Slot, Liverpool will still want to make it six wins out of six, which would pretty much ensure they would go straight into the main knockout stage and bypass February’s playoffs.

It would also mean that Slot could then rest some of his stars against Lille and PSV in their final two group games at the end of January.

First things first, though, is Tuesday’s trip to Girona, who are no pushovers but not going particularly well this season. The Spaniards were beaten 3-0 by Real Madrid at the weekend but were far from disgraced, matching the European champions shot for shot and winning more corners.

Michel has them playing a lively brand of football and a raft of injuries is a legitimate excuse for why they have not hit the heights of last season.

They aren’t getting many goals out of frontmen Bryan Gil – three goals since late August – or top scorer Cristhian Stuani, who is 38 and usually among the substitutes these days. Bojan Miovski, meanwhile, has found the net in just one league game this season.

Girona are ninth in La Liga yet only five teams have fired off fewer shots than the Catalans, who haven’t managed a single goal on the counter this season, a worry given that Liverpool should have control of possession.

The hosts have only three points to show for their efforts after five rounds of Champions League action, with defeats to PSG and Feyenoord followed by a 2-0 win over Slovan Bratislava and subsequent losses at PSV and Sturm Graz.

A reverse at the hands of Liverpool won’t quite be the end of Girona's European adventure but they’ll know the consequence of defeat. And given that they still have Milan and Arsenal to come, it’s long odds they are still dining at the top table past January.

Liverpool have one change to make with Alexis Mac Allister suspended and Slot may also want to give one or two a rest. A few Reds players looked leggy in the 3-3 draw at Newcastle last Wednesday, although they have had longer to prepare than expected following the postponement of Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

Slot’s men have won all five Champions League ties, culminating in outstanding home wins over Bayer Leverkusen (4-0) and Real Madrid (2-0), and they should have too much for Girona, even if a hammering is not on the cards.

Girona vs Liverpool bet builder predictions

Under 3.5 goals
Girona have not scored in two and are well enough organised to stop a reshuffled Liverpool pack running up a cricket score.

Over 3.5 Girona corners
Girona are averaging over six corners per game in the Champions League and have to be positive given the position they are in.

Oriol Romeu over 1.5 tackles
The ex-Chelsea and Southampton enforcer is averaging 4.3 tackles per game in Europe this term and Liverpool's slick midfield will test his timing.
