Dortmund vs Celtic predictions

After a lean run in European competitions, Celtic are targeting a third consecutive Champions League victory but it would be a major shock if they complete the hat-trick away to Borussia Dortmund.

The Glasgow giants beat Feyenoord 2-1 in last season's final group game and they kicked off their 2024-25 Champions League campaign with a 5-1 home victory over Slovan Bratislava.

Celtic are 4-7 with Hills to secure a playoff spot by finishing between ninth and 24th in the league phase and that looks a realistic target with fixtures against Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb and Young Boys to come.

Avoiding defeat against last season's runners-up in Dortmund would be a huge bonus for Brendan Rodgers' men although they could make the hosts work for their victory.

BVB topped a group containing Paris St-Germain, Milan and Newcastle last season before beating PSV Eindhoven, Atletico Madrid and PSG to set up a Champions League final against Real Madrid.

They gave the Spanish champions a scare but conceded two late goals, signalling the end of coach Edin Terzic's second spell at the club.

Prolific Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy arrived in the summer and Dortmund made a solid start under new manager Nuri Sahin.

They won 3-0 away to Club Brugge on matchday one but had to wait until the 76th minute to break through so backing the draw-Dortmund double result appeals when they face Celtic.

Late goals have been a feature of BVB's early weeks of the season - ten of their 14 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League have come after the hour-mark.

Celtic should be encouraged by signs of vulnerability in Dortmund's last two league outings as they lost 5-1 at Guirassy's former club Stuttgart before going 2-0 down at home to local rivals Bochum on Friday.

Guirassy halved the deficit just before half-time and Dortmund roared back to win 4-2, with substitute Felix Nmecha scoring the final goal of the game.

Sahin has a host of talented attacking midfielders in his squad, including 20-year-old Englishman Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, although Celtic have kept six clean sheets in nine games this season.

One of those shutouts came in a 3-0 league win over Rangers and they restricted Slovan Bratislava to just two shots on target on matchday one before easing to a 6-0 victory away to St Johnstone on Saturday.

The trip to Dortmund represents a significant step up for Rodgers and his players and BVB should expose the gap in quality in the second half.
