Celtic vs Leipzig predictions

"I'm not sure whether that was pragmatic enough for people."

Brendan Rodgers may have felt his comments following Celtic's 0-0 draw with Atalanta, tongue in cheek or not, were justified. However, as his critics were quick to call out, they appeared a bit rich considering his team had lost the shot count 23-4 and Opta had credited his goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with making six saves, the same number he made in the previous 7-1 shellacking at Borussia Dortmund.

The scoreline in Bergamo felt like a statistical anomaly, but after opening their Champions League campaign with an inspired 5-1 home win over Slovan Bratislava, it took Celtic to four points.

With winnable home outings against Club Brugge and Young Boys to come, Celtic have realistic hopes of progressing and, fresh from embarrassing domestic rivals Aberdeen 6-0 to reach the Scottish League Cup final, they will target another victory against Leipzig.

While the new format has benefited the Bhoys, Die Bullen, who have fallen to the eventual winners in each of the last two seasons, look to have been handed one of the toughest draws in the competition.

Leipzig have lost all three fixtures, squandering leads in their 2-1 reverse at Atletico Madrid and 3-2 defeat to Juventus, before losing 1-0 at home to Liverpool, and with clashes against Inter Milan and Aston Villa to come in their next two European opponents, this is a must-win match.

Celtic will need the Parkhead crowd behind them and more of the structure Rodgers boasted of in Bergamo, albeit against a side missing Xavi Simons due to an ankle injury.

Leipzig have struggled for fluidity without their primary playmaker but still boast strikers Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda.

Sesko has been especially bright, scoring three times in this competition and breaking the deadlock in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Dortmund.

Openda has yet to convert in Europe, but he scored on four occasions in last season's Champions League, and his five goals in the Bundesliga suggest it is only a matter of time.

They might be defensively frail - having conceded six in their last four games - but Marco Rose's side can be frightening on the break and could exploit the likely frenetic opening to the contest brought on by the frantic atmosphere.

Brendan's Bhoys rode their luck in Bergamo but even without Simons, Leipzig look like the type of team to get a win in Glasgow.

Key stat

Celtic have won their last two Champions League games at Parkhead but had previously failed to record a home victory in the main stage of this competition since 2013
