Team news

Bayern Munich
Alphonso Davies made his comeback following a heart condition diagnosis in the first leg and should feature again. Eric Choupo-Moting and Corentin Tolisso are out while Bouna Sarr is doubtful.

Villarreal
Unai Emery rested his entire first 11 from the first leg at the weekend so he is likely to play a similar side to reverse fixture Alberto Moreno is out and Boulaye Dia is a doubt.

Match preview

Villarreal showed that their victory over Juventus was no fluke as they beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Arnaut Danjuma grabbed the winner for the home side, who missed a number of other chances that would have given them a bigger cushion as they travel to the Allianz Arena.

A narrow offside denied Francis Coquelin a freak second goal and Gerard Moreno had a plethora of second-half opportunities, including hitting the post and being denied by a last-ditch Alphonso Davies block.

Villarreal showed in their run to winning the Europa League last year that they relish knockout football and their pace on the counter caused Bayern problems throughout.

The Yellow Submarine are well anchored in midfield by former Premier League stars Etienne Capoue and Francis Coquelin.

They are unlikely to secure a European spot in La Liga so manager Unai Emery took the unusual, but perfectly understandable, move of rotating his entire first 11 for his side’s weekend clash against Athletic Bilbao, which they drew 1-1.

Bayern meanwhile scraped past an obstinate Augsburg 1-0 thanks to an 83rd-minute Robert Lewandowski penalty.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann says his side need to be more unpleasant to play against and has also bemoaned the lack of form of his wide players, particularly Leroy Sane.

The Bayern coach’s persistent changes of formation and personnel have added to a sense that at times his side seem disjointed, whereas Villarreal were a cohesive unit in the first leg.

They will need all of that togetherness, however, in the face of a Bayern attacking juggernaut who have scored 30 goals in their nine Champions League games this year.

Their blank in the first leg was the first time they have failed to score in Europe’s premier competition since a 0-0 draw with Liverpool in February 2019, 30 games ago.

Given the financial disparity between the sides - Bayern’s reported wage bill is more than £100 million bigger than that of the Yellow Submarine - it is remarkable that they have been able to put themselves in such a position.

The attacking threat that they posed to Bayern’s backline looks unlikely to diminish in this second leg, especially given that their better performance against Juventus was in Turin.

Villarreal have found the net in all but one of their Champions League games this year and they are fancied to get on the scoresheet again in Munich, although Bayern are unlikely to be denied as they were in Spain.

Expect both teams to find the net and three or more goals in what looks set to be another thrilling European affair.
