Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich predictions

Aston Villa's only previous meeting with Bayern Munich was a memorable one as Peter Withe's goal gave them a 1-0 victory over the German giants in the 1982 European Cup final.

Bayern, fittingly, are the first team to visit Villa Park in this season's Champions League and, 42 years on from that famous night in Rotterdam, another 1-0 Villa win is an 18-1 chance in the correct-score market.

Those odds reflect not only the quality of Bayern's attacking unit but also Villa's vulnerability at the back.

Unai Emery's men enjoyed a smooth start to their European campaign, winning 3-0 away to Young Boys of Switzerland on matchday one, but they have failed to keep a clean sheet in seven domestic fixtures this term.

Both teams scored in their Premier League wins over West Ham, Leicester, Everton and Wolves as well as an EFL Cup success against League One Wycombe.

Villa were beaten 2-0 at home by Emery's former club Arsenal in August and Ipswich striker Liam Delap's brace earned the Tractor Boys a deserved 2-2 draw at Portman Road on Sunday.

Bayern also dropped points at the weekend but manager Vincent Kompany had few complaints about his side's display in the 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, who ended their run of 11 straight Bundesliga titles last season.

Kompany's men won the shot count 18-3, hitting the woodwork twice through Serge Gnabry, so backing Bayern to win a game featuring over 2.5 goals looks the best bet at Villa Park.

The summer appointment of Kompany, whose Burnley side lost 3-1 and 3-2 to Villa last season en route to Premier League relegation, raised eyebrows but he has made a strong start to his career in Munich.

Before Saturday's draw with Leverkusen, Bayern had won four out of four in the Bundesliga, scoring 16 goals, and they walloped Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in their opening Champions League fixture.

Harry Kane, who scored four of their nine goals on matchday one, is expected to overcome an ankle knock and Bayern's attacking threats include the in-form Gnabry, brilliant Germany youngster Jamal Musiala and winger Michael Olise, who signed off his Crystal Palace career with a 5-0 win over Villa on the final day of last season.

Bayern beat Arsenal in last term's Champions League quarter-finals and were a couple of minutes away from knocking out Real Madrid in the semis.

They won 28 and drew two of their last 30 Champions League group games before this season's change of format and Villa may struggle to avoid defeat against one of Europe's most consistent and ruthless teams.
