Aston Villa vs Celtic predictions

A Scottish team has not beaten an English team away from home in the Champions League since Celtic got the better of Leeds at Elland Road in 1970 and the wait may go on as the Hoops visit Aston Villa in their final league-phase game.

Both teams have secured a spot in the knockout stage but only Villa realistically have a chance of a top-eight finish and an automatic spot in the last 16.

Celtic can theoretically finish in the top eight but it would require the Bhoys to win and eight other results to go in their favour. Opta have rated the chances of all of those permutations occurring at less than one in 10,000.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have lost only one of their Champions League games this season - a 7-1 away defeat to Dortmund - but events this week have weakened their starting 11.

Star striker Kyogo Furuhashi has moved to Rennes while former Celtic hero Jota has arrived at Parkhead.

While the transfer may be a solid piece of business in the long term, it does reduce the quality of their first 11, especially with Daizen Maeda suspended after a red card in their 1-0 win over Young Boys last week.

Villa have plenty of injury issues themselves, especially at the back. Tyrone Mings limped off against West Ham at the weekend and while his injury does not look as bad as first feared, he is a doubt for this game.

Diego Carlos has been sold and Pau Torres is injured, meaning that Ezri Konsa is the only available central defender in the squad.

Celtic have defensive problem too as their lynchpin at the back Cameron Carter-Vickers missed training this week and right-back Alistair Johnston is one booking away from a suspension for the knockout stage so could be rested.

Villa have failed to win any of their last three games but have beaten Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Bologna on home soil this season and could be too strong going forward for the visitors.

A victory for the hosts should land them a top-eight spot as long as one of the four teams above them fails to win.

However with the question marks over both teams' defences, this could be an open affair and we should be in for some goals.
