Arsenal vs Shakhtar Donetsk predictions

Arsenal's 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday was made worse by Manchester City and Liverpool both winning the following day, but the Gunners can give their fans a pick-me-up in the form of victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta's men steered only one shot on target in defeat against the Cherries on Saturday, but the dismissal of William Saliba after 30 minutes undoubtedly played its part in the outcome.

The Gunners had to work harder without the Frenchman on the pitch and held firm until the 70th minute, when Ryan Christie broke the deadlock and Justin Kluivert made it 2-0 from the spot nine minutes later.

It was an eye-catching result and has put a dent in Arsenal's title prospects, but there is a long way to go this season and they have the chance to deliver an immediate response on Tuesday.

Arsenal were on a four-match winning streak prior to the international break and all of those victories came at the Emirates Stadium, where they are a tough nut to crack.

Their first home fixture in this season's Champions League resulted in a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain, taking them to four points from two games after their opening goalless draw away to Atalanta.

Arsenal demonstrated excellent defensive resolve in both of those games and that could again be the theme on Tuesday.

Saliba will be suspended for their crucial Premier League battle with Liverpool on Sunday, but the defender can at least help his team to a shutout success against Shakhtar Donetsk.

It has been a pretty underwhelming season for Shakhtar with Oleksandriya and Polissya Zhytomyr above them in the Ukrainian Premier League standings and posing the greater threat to leaders Dynamo Kyiv.

The Ukrainians have also underperformed in the Champions League, opening with a respectable 0-0 draw against Bologna before being thumped 3-0 by Atalanta on matchday two.

A lack of attacking prowess was evident in those two fixtures as Shakhtar generated just one shot on target across them and even the return of Danylo Sikan from injury is unlikely to change that.

A win to nil is appealing but punters should instead split stakes between 2-0 and 3-0 wins with Arteta likely to rotate personnel once the lead is established.

Each of Arsenal's last four wins in all competitions have been settled by two-goal margins and it could be a similar story when they welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to the Emirates Stadium.

Key stat

Arsenal have lost just one of their 11 games in all competitions this season.
