Brighton vs Manchester City predictions
It has certainly been ten days to forget for Manchester City, but it might be about to get worse when the Premier League champions head to Brighton.
A League Cup exit after a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham was followed by a shock defeat by the same scoreline against Bournemouth, before a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Sporting in the Champions League.
That trio of defeats marks the first time City have lost three games in a row since April 2018, with the opponents adding further cause for concern for the Citizens.
Their unwanted 2018 run came via a 3-2 Manchester derby loss to United which was sandwiched between Champions League quarter-final defeats to Liverpool.
United finished second in the Premier League that season, while Liverpool made the Champions League final, suggesting they were of a much higher level than Spurs, Bournemouth and Sporting.
The 4-1 humiliation in Lisbon was made worse by the fact that it was masterminded by incumbent Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, making City the butt of the joke for their rivals. The usually cool Pep Guardiola will have spent the past few days irritated and pondering a path back to winning ways.
Guardiola’s record of 13 wins and just one loss in his 15 games against Brighton suggests that route has been handed to him on a silver platter, but things may not be so straightforward this time around.
The Seagulls have started the season excellently under Fabian Hurzeler, losing just two of their opening ten league games, and while their recent results against City leave plenty to be desired, Bournemouth proved last weekend that records are made to be broken.
The Cherries had lost their previous 14 Premier League meetings with City before beating the champions 2-1, a result which will give Brighton hope for this clash.
Albion's performance against Liverpool last Saturday should do likewise. Hurzeler’s men had 51 per cent possession against the league leaders, while also managing a respectable five shots on target despite eventually going down 2-1 at Anfield.
Danny Welbeck has been in great form to start the campaign, scoring six goals and providing two assists in ten league games, while Hurzeler has also stated that star man Joao Pedro could return for this match.
Brighton have the attacking options to hurt any side, especially a depleted City defence which will be without John Stones and Ruben Dias.
Rodri’s continued absence in midfield is being felt more with every passing week, while a run of one goal in five league games for Erling Haaland suggests that he could do with a rest. City’s decision to sell Julian Alvarez is beginning to look like a rare transfer mistake.
Brighton are unbeaten in the Premier League at home this season, overcoming Manchester United and Tottenham at the Amex, and they may be the latest side to add to City’s winless run, which could be extended to four matches for the first time since Guardiola’s debut season in England.
Key stat
Manchester City are on a three-game losing streak, their first since April 2018.
