Aston Villa vs West Ham predictions

West Ham are hoping for instant improvement under their new manager, Graham Potter, but they could be handed a reality check by FA Cup third round hosts Aston Villa, who look solid favourites to advance to the final 32.

Potter has been out of the dugout since April 2023 when he was relieved of his duties after a largely unsuccessful seven-month spell at Chelsea. But he was credited with doing excellent work at Brighton, who he helped to establish as a strong Premier League club, and had huge success with Swedish minnows Ostersunds, where he won three promotions, lifted the Swedish cup and advanced them to knockout rounds of the 2017-18 Europa League.

However, Potter's positive impact with Ostersunds and Brighton happened over long periods of time and the 49-year-old may need a while to get West Ham playing in the way that he wants to.

Potter inherits a team sitting 14th in the Premier League and short of confidence after recent drubbings at home to Liverpool and away to Manchester City.

Just seven points separate the Hammers from the relegation zone and the top priority for Potter will be to steer his team to a more comfortable position as quickly as possible.

Next week's Premier League games at home to Fulham and Crystal Palace will be key tests but the FA Cup represents the only hope of lifting a trophy, so Potter will probably go strong with his selection in an early bid to get supporters on side.

However, he will be without top-scorer Jarrod Bowen and that could be a key factor against a Villa side who tend to score plenty of goals.

Villa manager Unai Emery has some tricky decisions to make with influential players Pau Torres, Jhon Duran and John McGinn unavailable and a busy period coming up.

But Emery generally enjoys knockout football and will want to avoid a similar experience to the EFL Cup fourth round when a largely second-string Villa side succumbed to a 2-1 loss at home to Crystal Palace.

Villa are boosted by the return from suspension of Morgan Rogers and have the option of deploying powerful midfielder Amadou Onana, who was an unused substitute for last Saturday's 2-1 success at home to Leicester.

They made hard work of defeating the lowly Foxes but are unbeaten in seven home fixtures and should get the better of West Ham in a high-scoring encounter.

Aston Villa to win
Villa are having a mixed season but they are strong on home soil and should advance at the expense of West Ham, who may need time to adjust to their new manager.
