PDC World Darts Championship final predictions

Luke Littler vs Michael van Gerwen predictions

Head-to-head: Tied at 6-6

Having fallen at the final hurdle of last year's PDC World Championship on his debut to Luke Humphries, the stage looks set for Luke Littler to go one better and make history by becoming the youngest world champion ever.

Standing in the 17-year-old's way is Michael van Gerwen, who is bidding to end his six-year wait for a fourth world crown.

Van Gerwen still holds the record for being the youngest world champion, having won his maiden Alexandra Palace crown as a 24-year-old in 2014, but Littler looks ready to eclipse him and is destined to complete what has been a fairytale rise to the top.

Ever since defending champion Humphries crashed out in the fourth round against Peter Wright, this has been the final on everyone's radar and they have been the best two players in the tournament by a distance.

Littler has a tournament average of 102.13, with four of his five wins going over the three-figure mark, while MvG's is 99.75 with the 103.10 average he posted in the 5-3 quarter-final win over the in-form Callan Rydz showing his current levels.

The problem for the Green Machine is that the longer the format gets, the stronger Littler becomes and there were very few faults evident in his resounding 6-1 success over Stephen Bunting in the semi-final, where he averaged 105.48 and capped off the win with a 170 checkout.

The teenage prodigy's confidence on the big stage seems to be growing and last season's final against Humphries, which he lost 7-4 but still averaged 101.13, should have him spot on mentally for this battle.

If anything there may be slightly more pressure on the shoulders of Van Gerwen, who lost his last two world finals, in 2020 to Peter Wright and in 2023 to Michael Smith.

The crowd are also going to be overwhelmingly behind Littler, meaning Van Gerwen has to start strongly and silence them early, something difficult to do given the way in which The Nuke has been coming out of the blocks.

Littler's timing through the tournament has been impeccable and his heavy 180-hitting - he has had 64 maximums to Van Gerwen's 43 - is sure to put his opponent under it from the off.

That is when MvG can start to fluff his lines, which would bring the Ally Pally crowd into play, and Littler is unlikely to relent.

Remarkably, Littler has averaged more than 100 on this stage nine times from only 12 appearances since his debut and would be the less likely of the pair to falter.

The final two meetings between these two last year went Littler's way, with The Nuke easing to an 11-4 success in the World Series Finals semi-final in September before a 6-1 victory in the quarter-final of a European Tour event, and he averaged in excess of 107.95 on both occasions.

So the best bet on offer could be for Littler to rewrite history in style and run out an empathic winner over this first-to-seven-set encounter, which would also make a total 180s line of 36.5 on the high side.
