PDC World Darts Championship Day Five predictions

The luck deserted the Irish when the draw was made for the Paddy Power World Darts Championship as two of their top stars were paired against each other in round one.

The Emerald Isle won't quite come to a standstill on Friday night, but the pubs of Borrisokane, County Tipperary and Cappamore, and County Limerick might be more boisterous than usual when their favourite darting sons, Dylan Slevin and Willie O'Connor, toe the oche at Alexandra Palace.

It means that one of them will be on the first flight out of Heathrow in the morning and the chances are it will be Slevin heading for Terminal 2.O'Connor is the rightful favourite – he's 16 years older than his compatriot, vastly more experienced and in good form.

And the Magpie may well be worth backing not simply to get over the line, but to do so by landing the most maximums as well.

O'Connor has good memories of last year's ultimate round one whitewash – 3-0, 3-0, 3-0 over a nonplussed Bhav Patel – but knows rising star Slevin represents a far sterner challenge.

Slevin, who cites O'Connor as his mentor, beat Wessel Nijman at the World Youth Championship before going on to the semis and didn't disgrace himself on his Ally Pally debut last year, winning the first set against Florian Hempel before losing 3-1.He averaged over four points less than O'Connor on the Pro Tour this year, with the senior man signing off with a run to the last four at the final Players Championship floor event.

O'Connor also averaged a 180 every 3.9 legs during the Players Championship campaign, Slevin one every 5.8, hence the thought that the double's worth a punt.

Michael van Gerwen tops the bill on day six as he takes on James 'Hillbilly' Hurrell in the final match of the night.

The Dutchman would usually be the first name on any daily acca, and he should take care of Hurrell, but memories of Mighty Mike being dumped out by Scott Williams in last year's quarters and the fact that he hasn't had the best of years suggests the three-time world champion is better watched in his first outing.

If there is a multiple to be contemplated then how about Stephen Bunting -1.5 sets against Kai Gotthardt and Ian White -1.5 against Sandro Eric Sosing.

Sosing looked starstruck last year, when losing 3-1 to Lee Evans with a sub-76 average, while the hugely consistent Bunting should have too much for Gotthard. The double pays a shade over even money.
