Paddy Power World Darts Championship Day Nine predictions

Florian Hempel was impressive when downing Jeffrey de Zwaan in round one of the Paddy Power PDC World Championship and the German looks ready to produce another big performance when he takes on second-round opponent Daryl Gurney on Monday.

Hempel averaged 92.73 in his opening success over the Black Cobra, and while those aren’t unbeatable numbers by any means, he hit seven 180s and was 43 per cent on finishing doubles in that contest and that kind of performance will make the Cologne arrowsmith tricky to beat.

The 34-year-old reached an average of 104.63 in the first set against De Zwaan and that’s an indication of the peak level Hempel can reach.

The German pushed Luke Humphries to a deciding set in the 2023 World Championship, while he beat Martin Schindler and Dimitri van den Bergh on the Alexandra Palace stage two years ago, and while Gurney has enjoyed a good season, the 13-10 on offer about a Hempel victory is too big to ignore.

Martin Lukeman has developed into a top-level performer over the last 12 months and Smash can get the better of Andrew Gilding.

The Hammersmith hitter will clearly need to better the performance level of his first-round 3-1 victory over Nitin Kumar, but that was only Lukeman’s third appearance on the Ally Pally stage and there should be improvement to come for the experience.

Lukeman made the final of the Grand Slam of Darts earlier in this campaign and it’s clear that he has the game to go deep in major events.

Gilding is a former UK Open champion, but that success was a bolt from the blue and it has been far more of a struggle for him this year.

Goldfinger has never made it past the second round of the PDC World Championship and another early exit is likely to follow.

Former world champion Rob Cross is in action against Scott Williams and Voltage is 1-2 to power through to round three.
