PDC World Darts Championship Day Five predictions

Former world champion Michael Smith will need to be at his sharpest when he takes on Kevin Doets in the final game of an eight-match bonanza of arrers at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

It's a rematch of last year's opening-night showdown in which Smith had to come from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

Doets looked okay when beating Noa-Lynn van Leuven 3-1 in his opener but, if Bully Boy's head is in the right place, the ex-champ should land all the knockout blows.

Old stage Mensur Suljovic is back at the Palace having missed out last year and he faces a brute of an opener against Canadian flag-bearer Matt Campbell.

While Suljovic had last Christmas at home in Vienna, Campbell was having fun at Ally Pally, taking care of Lourence Ilagan and James Wade before running into Luke Littler.

Since then, the Ginja Ninja has gone on to reach a maiden Players Championship final, beaten Jeff Smith and Stowe Buntz to be crowned North American champion and crushed Suljovic 6-1 in their one and only meeting.

Suljovic was finishing the year quite strongly on the floor before flopping at both the Grand Slam and Players Championship Finals, and he has no affection for Alexandra Palace where his record, for a former Premier League ace, is worse than ordinary.

A couple of other outsiders to consider on day five are Romeo Grbavac and Robert Owen.

Grbavac takes on Callan Rydz, a one-time prodigy who has struggled to train on after reaching the quarters in 2022.

The Geordie still plays a lot on main stages and has reached a European Tour semi-final but he could have his hands full with Croatia's Grbavac, a man who helped his country overcome Wales among others to reach the last eight of this year's World Cup.

He took out the pride of Eastern Europe to book his ticket and if he can cope with debut nerves, then he's definitely got a simple throw which should repeat.

Gabriel Clemens went one better than Rydz 12 months later when he reached the semis but late-tournament sightings have been fleeting ever since.

Owen, who defied the odds to beat Niels Zonneveld in round one, should have nothing to fear and he looks as id he possesses more than enough bottle to cope should it go deep.
