PDC World Darts Championship Day 13 predictions
Tournament favourite Luke Littler overcame a sluggish start to see off Ian White in the third round of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship on Saturday and the teenage prodigy may be forced into a battle again by Ryan Joyce in the last 16.
There have been flashes of brilliance from last season’s runner-up, who posted a tournament record set average of 140.91 in his curtain-raiser against Ryan Meikle before firing in 12 maximums in a 4-1 win over White.
However, there have also been some flat moments from the darts' biggest draw, none more so than when averaging only 84.53 in the first set against White.
Littler won the opening set on Saturday in spite of that mediocrity but the Nuke has dropped sets in both his victories at the Palace, suggesting Joyce could have some early joy.
Relentless is not flashy but he is consistently solid, highlighted by his trio of wins over Darius Labanauskas, Danny Noppert and Ryan Searle at Alexandra Palace this year.
The unseeded Joyce dealt with everything a fired-up Searle threw his way in round three, edging to a 4-3 victory with a 97.40 average, and he may be able to pinch the opening set against Littler.
The winner of that contest will face Nathan Aspinall or Ricardo Pietreczko in the quarter-finals and their last-16 meeting looks an intriguing encounter.
There isn't much to split them in the betting but there may have been a slight overreaction to Pietreczko’s 4-1 win over last year’s surprise Ally Pally semi-finalist Scott Williams in round three.
It will be impressive if the German can replicate a 97.00 average against the Asp, who is a PDC major winner, twice a World Championship semi-finalist and will put Pikachu under extreme pressure from the off.
The raucous atmosphere will be music to the ears of Aspinall, who is fancied to build on his 4-0 victory over Andrew Gilding and set up a likely last-eight date with Littler.
Stephen Bunting should be feeling optimistic ahead of his fourth-round encounter with Luke Woodhouse, a player he has beaten in nine of their previous ten meetings.
However, wins over seeds Mike de Decker and Damon Heta show that Woody thrives on the big stage and the potential for a lengthy contest can see the pair make light work of the total 180s line.
Woodhouse has hit 16 maximums across his three wins – his 4-3 victory over Heta last time out featured 15 – and he and Bunting should be up to hitting 14 between them over the best of seven sets.
