PDC World Darts Championship Day Three predictions
It’s day three of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace on Tuesday and the highlight is surely the round-one dust-up between Ryan Meikle and Fallon Sherrock.
Meikle, aka The Barber, will get the hair-dryer treatment from a crowd right behind the Queen of the Palace.
But Sherrock has been ill for a lot of the year and is not playing as well as when she took the Palace by storm five years ago. If Suffolk leftie Meikle can keep his cool and play the board, he should win routinely enough.
He's around 1-3 but if Meikle does come through it follows he should win most legs, so the even money that he wins and records the highest checkout appeals.
Canada's Jim Long can take time out from travelling the globe to raise the Maple Leaf aloft at Alexandra Palace.
Gentleman Jim, a 56-year-old retired motor mechanic, combines darts with seeing the world these days so the long flight from London, Ontario, to London, England, ticks a few boxes for the Canadian flag bearer.
And he has to believe that he can not only toe the oche at the Palace but also win his first-round game, just as he did on his previous appearance.
That was six years ago when he saw off Mickey Mansell before losing to Benito van de Pas. This time around it's James 'Hillbilly' Hurrell standing in his way of a date with Michael van Gerwen on Friday.
Long's the outsider but more than good enough to land the odds.
The veteran has had a great 2024 starting with beating the likes of David Cameron and Martin Adams to reach the World Seniors semis, then landing a couple of wins on the CDC Tour and reaching the Continental Cup final.
A former World Cup quarter-finalist, Long had no issue with nerves back in December 2018 and will be hoping he can use his experience against Hurrell, who is making his debut.
Hurrell has beaten Luke Littler on the floor this year during a modest entrance to the Pro Tour. He's a good player but no good thing on the big stage where Long could easily have his number.
Rashad Sweeting becomes the first player from the Bahamas to grace the Ally Pally stage and if you look at his averages you get a sense he may not be there for long. He plays Sweden's Jeffrey de Graaf and the whitewash has an inevitable look about it.
