2025 PDC World Darts Championship predictions
Twelve months after Luke Humphries and Luke Littler produced a Paddy Power World Darts Championship Final to remember, the two best players on the planet are all the rage heading back to Alexandra Palace.
Cool Hand and The Nuke have been by a distance the darting stars of 2024. World number one Humphries has added seven titles to his world crown while 17-year-old Littler has mopped up ten titles including three majors.
In a year that has seen Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright and many more established stars stuck in neutral at best, reverse at worst, the two Lukes have suddenly looked in a class of their own.
But while the odds tell us that Humphries and Littler are the outstanding acts in the 96-player field, the draw means we can't get a repeat of last year's final.
Michael Smith to win the title – 33-1
Luke Littler's soaring rise from the Development Tour to number four in the PDC's rankings in the space of a year means that he and Humphries are seeded to meet in the semi-finals.
The two of them dominate the top half of the draw and if anyone else from the top two sections wants to make the final, they are probably going to have to beat either, and possibly both, players.
And while Humphries and Littler will be under pressure, and a very different pressure from anything they will have experienced before, if they can get through their opener – Cool Hand will probably play Thibaut Tricole, The Nuke probably Ryan Meikle – they are going to become close to unstoppable. Until, if the seedings stack up, they clash in the last four.
The bottom half of the draw, on the other hand, is absolutely wide open with more mouthwatering clashes that may not be avoided, for example Michael van Gerwen against Gary Anderson as early as round four.
Anderson's numbers this year are brilliant but big wins are eluding him. His only titles have come on the floor and in the European Grand Prix way back in April.
Van Gerwen has problems with consistency like so many others, among them Michael Smith. But the number two seed actually looks a really attractive bet in the bottom half.
Bully Boy, like so many, hasn't had an amazing year yet he has still helped Humphries win the World Cup, won on the floor and reached the World Series final plus the semis of both the Premier League and the Matchplay.
He's all about rhythm, and if big scores flow the doubles usually follow. If he gets into that groove, then let's not forget he is the player who won this title just two years ago.
He doesn't look to have an issue reaching round four and if he does get to that stage and is throwing well he becomes a major danger to anyone.
Martin Schindler to reach quarter-finals – 4-1
So many big names in unconvincing nick going into this tournament while so many of the next generation of stars are as yet unproven on the Ally Pally stage.
Martin Schindler falls somewhere between the two but there is absolutely no doubt that the 28-year-old has an outstanding opportunity to reach the quarters for the first time.
In the last two years The Wall has been knocked down in round three by first Smith, then Scott Williams. Both matches ended 4-3 and the German should have won them both.
With two European Tour event wins in 2024 he is improving in the bigger competitions and looking more at home on the biggest stages. And he must be happy with a section of the draw where the three other seeds are Dave Chisnall (bad back), Gabriel Clemens (bad form) and Dimitri van den Bergh, who has been courting the help of a psychologist in a bid to stop beating himself.
Schindler has been presented with a solid gold shot at going deep and now has to prove he can take it.
Scott Williams to reach quarter-finals – 12-1
Some players look born to play on the Alexandra Palace stage – Scott Williams for one.
Shaggy created headlines galore 12 months ago by picking off Danny Noppert, Schindler, Damon Heta and Van Gerwen to reach the semis, and he loved every minute of it.
He's a big price to come through an eighth where the seeds include an up-and-down Rob Cross, an untested - though admittedly hugely talented - Gian van Veen and Nathan Aspinall, who is coming back from injury.
Luke Humphries most tournament 180s – 4-1
And so back to the top half and the likelihood of a Humphries-Littler semi-final.
There will be challenges for both but they should clear them with a minimum of fuss.
Neither looks great value to win the title but Cool Hand would just about be the choice to beat the Nuke, as he did in the final of the Players Championship Finals, the last event before this one. And, perhaps crucially, as he did last January and those memories will never fade – for either of them.
And if he does get to the final then he is going to pile up a barrage of 180s, probably eclipsing the tournament-record 73 he amassed 12 months ago.
