Heavyweight contest set to go the distance

All four players in the bottom half of the draw of the Grand Slam of Darts will fancy their chances of making it through to the final and it looks set to be a night of high-quality tungsten at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton.

The first quarter-final features two players undefeated this week in Gary Anderson and Mensur Suljovic and their match could go all the way.

Mighty Mensur is now an established big-name player and there's no getting away from the fact he's in the form of his life. He recorded his highest TV average in the second round against Berry van Peer (105.84) and the Austrian sixth seed has been a tough rival for Anderson in the past. He leads 4-2 in the head-to-head.

However, the Flying Scotsman looked as good as ever when reeling off seven legs in a row against Michael Smith - eventually averaging just under 107 - and anything close to that form would see the two-time world champion through in what will surely be a tight encounter.

BDO world champion Glen Durrant has impressed with his stage manner and he has already got the better of his quarter-final opponent Peter Wright in the group stages.

This longer format could favour the colourful Scotsman, who looked in good nick in dismantling Stephen Bunting in the second round, but Durrant is as solid as they come and if the Teesside chucker can continue his prodigious form on the outer ring he looks to be a bit of value to progress.
