Day three preview

Tournament debutants Gabriel Pascaru and Justin Hood kick off the action on day three of the BDO World Championships and there could be some value in siding with the Romanian qualifier at the O2 Indigo.

Pascaru was cleaning up in eastern European tournaments at the end of 2019 with the Ukraine Open, Russian Open and Hungarian Masters all falling his way.

Throwing an 11-darter to clinch the title in Ukraine and hitting a 126 finish to win a final-leg shootout in the Russian Open shows that he’s a capable player who can perform under pressure.

Hood will be no pushover. He has thrown some eye-catching averages for the Somerset county side and came through the qualifiers, claiming the scalp of 2016 runner-up Jeff Smith along the way.

However, bookmakers may have paid a little too much attention to that last piece of form and his price looks too short.

In the evening opener, Darren Herewini can account for 2012 PDC World Championship finalist Andy Hamilton.

The New Zealander looked in decent nick when coming through his preliminary outing on Saturday and while an average of 87.30 is nothing to get too excited about, the experience of the stage will help.

There’s little evidence that the Hammer is the same player that used to ply his trade in the PDC.

Other notable day-three matches include top seed Wesley Harms getting his first taste of the O2 stage and reigning ladies champion Mikuru Suzuki taking on Devon county stalwart Maria O’Brien in a repeat of last year’s semi-final.
