European Darts Championship predictions

Luke Humphries triumphed in the Czech Open last Sunday, but this weekend may be the turn of Luke Littler to parade silverware in Europe.

Littler seems worth a decent wager at 4-1 for European Championship glory given the way he performed in Prague last week. The Nuke went back to using his old darts – the set which quickly made him a superstar – and his comfort at the oche was obvious.

Littler averaged 110.43 in a 6-1 destruction of Nathan Aspinall in his opening Czech Open fixture, then 116.51 in a 6-3 dismissal of Damon Heta. Littler's quarter-final against Michael van Gerwen was of a ridiculously high standard – Van Gerwen averaged 112.19 and lost 6-1.

The draw was unkind to Littler in Prague and after the masterclass against MvG, the teenager had to face Humphries in the semis on the same night. A few missed doubles at key moments meant Nuke lost 7-4 despite averaging 106.73.

The Dortmund draw will encourage Littler. He seems to have a better chance than Humphries of reaching the semis, where they could meet again on Sunday. Aspinall, Chris Dobey, Jonny Clayton, Rob Cross, James Wade and Peter Wright are all potentially tricky early opponents for Humphries.

While Littler can be fancied to reach the final from the bottom half of the draw, local hero Martin Schindler looks a great each-way investment from the top half.

The Wall, as the German is known, is the number one seed for this event on the basis of his excellent European Tour campaign. He has already won a title in his homeland this year – the International Open in April – and will be relishing the support again this week.

Gerwyn Price has had injury issues and Schindler will fear nobody in his half of the draw.
