Stage ten preview
After a day off, the Tour de France resumes on Tuesday with Stage ten's 148.1km ride from Morzine to Megeve.
Race director Christian Prudhomme's route notes are perhaps instructive, describing its beauty as much as its difficulty. The Peloton is set to meander through Alpine valleys and straddle Lake Geneva before battling it out on the closing Category Two Montee de l'Altiport de Megeve.
Eagle-eyed fans will recognise the finish, as it was used on the final two days of the Criterium du Dauphine in 2020, when Lennard Kamna triumphed on the penultimate stage before Sepp Kuss won 24 hours later.
Wednesday and Thursday are both big mountain days so Kuss is likely to concentrate on his domestique duties for Jumbo-Visma. However, it is a different story for Kamna.
His Bora-Hansgrohe team leader Aleksandr Vlasov has struggled for form and fitness, freeing up other riders to go on the attack.
Kamna did so on Friday's stage to La Super Planche des Belles Filles and his courage was almost rewarded, but he found himself the victim of a late skirmish between the favourites who caught him with the line in sight.
With a decent 19th place at the Giro d'Italia, where he won the stage to Mount Etna, Kamna's form is good and Tuesday sets up well for him.
With the favourites perhaps eyeing targets later in the week, don't be surprised to see the German climber take a second career win in Megeve.
