New Zealand vs England second Test predictions

England lost to New Zealand by just one run in one of the all-time great Test finishes at the Basin Reserve in February 2023 and Brendon McCullum's men will be after revenge when the teams reconvene at the Wellington venue on Thursday.

Last man James Anderson was caught down leg side when England needed just two to win on the fifth day of a thrilling Test in Wellington at the start of last year.

But that was New Zealand's only win in their last six meetings with England in this format and the tourists are value to win this time to claim victory in the three-Test series.

Although aided by some poor New Zealand fielding, England ran out eight-wicket winners in the first Test with Harry Brook striking 171 in the first innings and Brydon Carse taking ten wickets in the match at Christchurch.

Debutant Jacob Bethell scored a 37-ball 50 in the second innings, Ollie Pope impressed as stand-in wicketkeeper and Carse and Gus Atkinson look like a capable pair in England's new-look bowling attack.

Ben Stokes has also been declared fit for England, who are overpriced to win the second Test at a shade of odds-against.

Punters should not read too much into home advantage when these teams play given the similarity of conditions to those in the UK and New Zealand's 3-0 thrashing of India, while impressive, looks like an anomaly.

The Black Caps' Test team lost 2-0 to Sri Lanka in Galle in September and were beaten by Australia by the same scoreline on their own patch in March.

The retirement of Trent Boult earlier this year has not helped matters and England can establish an unassailable 2-0 lead.

After a first-innings duck, Joe Root reached 23 not out in his second innings in Christchurch but should take things up a notch in Wellington.

Root was a standout player in that agonising one-run defeat at the Basin Reserve last year with an unbeaten 153 followed by a score of 95, and he could be dangerous upon his return to the venue.

Root has put in some big innings for England's Test team in the second half of the year, striking 143 against Sri Lanka and 262 against Pakistan, and he is worth a bet to top-score for his side.
