New Zealand vs England prediction

England's last Test match in New Zealand ended in a one-run defeat in Wellington in February 2023 and another thrilling series between the well matched rivals is in prospect.

England, coached by Kiwi legend Brendon McCullum, have plenty of local knowledge and the series starts in Christchurch, birthplace of visiting captain Ben Stokes.

However, New Zealand produced one of the greatest performances in Test history this month, completing a 3-0 clean sweep in India, and they look the team worth backing to edge the three-match series.

England blew a great chance of a 2-0 series victory in New Zealand last year, winning the first Test by 267 runs and enforcing the follow-on in game two before a stunning comeback from the hosts.

However, that England side contained Stuart Broad and James Anderson, who have both retired, and there are plenty of doubts hanging over the batting order.

Ollie Pope, under fire for his lack of consistency at number three, will bat at six and keep wicket with debutant Jacob Bethell coming in at first wicket down.

Skipper Stokes has also been short of runs while New Zealand welcome back record Test runscorer Kane Williamson, whose understudy Will Young was player of the series in India.

While England stumbled to a 2-1 defeat on turning pitches in Pakistan, New Zealand showcased their versatility and depth of talent in India.

Their pacemen demolished India in the first Test before the spinners took over in the next two games and Young, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and skipper Tom Latham all contributed match-defining innings.

Mitchell loves batting against England and he looks overpriced to top-score for New Zealand in the series.

He made 73 on his Test debut in Hamilton in 2019 and averages 74.1 against England after seven Tests, boosted by centuries at Lord's, Trent Bridge and Headingley in 2022.

Mitchell made 102 and 81 in last year's Christchurch Test against Sri Lanka, signed off the India series with scores of 82 and 21, and could play a key role in the middle-order again.

This is the final series of Tim Southee's 16-year Test career but he could be overshadowed by fellow fast bowler Matt Henry in Christchurch.

Henry has produced some outstanding spells this year, taking 7-67 against Australia at the Hagley Oval in March and ripping through India's top order to finish with 5-15 in the first innings of October's first Test.

He has excellent course form in Christchurch with bat and ball, taking 30 wickets in his last four Tests at the venue and scoring three of his four half-centuries at the Hagley Oval.

Despite New Zealand's 2-0 home defeat to Australia in March, Henry was named player of the series after contributing 17 wickets and 101 runs and he is a tempting bet to win the individual award in the first Test.
