England vs Australia prediction

Harry Brook will captain England in their five-match ODI series against Australia as Jos Buttler is sidelined by a calf injury and bookmakers expect a tough challenge for the stand-in skipper.

England are 6-4 to win the first ODI at Trent Bridge on Thursday, where they piled up 481-6 on their way to a comprehensive victory over the Aussies in June 2018.

That win was a major milestone on England's path to World Cup glory in 2019 but they lost six of their first seven games in their 2023 trophy defence in India.

Nine of the 11 Australia players who stunned India in last year's World Cup final could line up against England with the only absentees being rested skipper Pat Cummins and David Warner, who has retired from international duty.

England Test opener Ben Duckett is set to feature at the top of the order for the first time in ODI cricket and he can make an impact at his home ground.

Duckett played some fine innings against Australia in last summer's Ashes and scored 71 off 59 balls and 76 from 92 deliveries in July's Nottingham Test against the West Indies.

Australia's ace new-ball bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have not played much cricket since June's T20 World Cup and Duckett, who smashed an unbeaten 107 off 78 in a rain-affected ODI against Ireland last September, could take advantage.

Liam Livingstone has been added to the England ODI squad after two impressive performances in the T20 series. He top-scored with 37 and took 3-22 at the Rose Bowl before claiming 2-16 and smashing a matchwinning 87 off 47 balls in Cardiff.

Along with fellow spinning all-rounders Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell, Livingstone can play a big role for England in both innings and he had performance-point make-ups of 37, 99 and 45 in his last three ODIs in the West Indies last December.
