England vs Australia prediction

October may be looming but the final series of the English cricket season is still a live contest after Harry Brook's century steered the hosts to victory in Tuesday's third ODI against Australia.

An excellent 156-run third-wicket partnership between Brook and Will Jacks meant England were well ahead of the DLS par score when rain interrupted their run-chase in the 38th over at Chester-le-Street.

That ended Australia's 14-match winning streak in 50-over internationals but the world champions are solid favourites to take a 3-1 lead in the five-match series at Lord's.

They beat England convincingly in their last ODI at the Home of Cricket as left-arm quicks Jason Behrendorff and Mitchell Starc shared nine wickets during the league stage of the 2019 World Cup.

Starc also claimed 5-26 at Lord's against runners-up New Zealand five years ago and he should enjoy his return to St John's Wood.

He has posed a consistent threat in this series, picking up 3-50 in the second ODI at Headingley and dismissing England openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett in the third over on Tuesday.

Damp, overcast, chilly conditions should assist fast bowlers such as Starc and a reduced-overs contest is a possibility given the weather forecast.

That could bring Jacks, England's number three, to the fore as he has been named player of the match in three of his last four T20 Blast appearances for Surrey against Middlesex at Lord's.

His Blast heroics at the ground include 55 off 30 balls in 2020 and an astonishing 70 from just 24 deliveries the following summer.

Jacks goes into the fourth ODI in good heart after playing a key role on Tuesday, when his innings of 82 included 14 runs off four balls at the start of Starc's second spell.

England never looked back in the run-chase after that timely counter-attack and Jacks also batted well for his 56-ball 62 in the first ODI.
