Preview

Rangers run out at Ibrox trying to avert a Champions League whitewash but it's hard to think of an obvious reason to oppose Ajax.

The Gers have endured a horror return to European football's top table with a record of played five, lost five, conceded 19 in their Group A campaign.

They can, however, still qualify for the Europa League – if they beat Ajax by five goals.

Given that Rangers are missing virtually an entire first team through injury and suspensions, and given they can’t buy a win, they look well worth taking on.

The Glasgow giants have been awful for a while with loads of pressure on Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Saturday's 4-1 demolition of Aberdeen reflects badly on the Dons rather than on how tidily Rangers performed.

The problem is that two more injuries in defence mean another rearguard reshuffle is needed before they try to stifle an Ajax side who clobbered the Scots 4-0 in Amsterdam in September.

That was the high point for Ajax, who have subsequently lost all four ties, heavily in cases, against Napoli and Liverpool. They are also at home to PSV on Sunday which may persuade some punters to believe that head coach Alfred Schreuder's priorities are elsewhere.

Having said that, Rangers will look to come on to them and that opens up possibilities galore on the counter for Dusan Tadic, Steven Bergwijn and Steven Berghuis to exploit, and they also boast decent firepower on the bench should the gaffer wish to think about the upcoming weekend.
