Preview
The 2020 Candidates tournament is going ahead in Russia and bookmakers are betting on it.
Eight of the world’s top grandmasters are fighting it out in an all-play-all, the winner earning the right to challenge Magnus Carlsen for the world title, and the action can be followed on chess24.com.
Draw frequency is high. Of the 12 games played in the first three rounds, seven were drawn. Fabiano Caruana has the highest ELO rating but he lost against Ding Liren in round three and it’s difficult to bounce back after a defeat, even though he’ll have the white pieces against tricky Ian Nepomniachtchi in round four.
Liren’s form has been patchy, and he meets draw specialist Anish Giri, so the best chance of a decisive result could come in the Maxime Vachier-Lagrave v Alexander Grischuk match.
Both players have attacking styles, and with the white pieces the in-form Vachier-Lagrave is the selection to give the time-trouble prone Grischuk plenty to think about.
