Fury vs Usyk 2 prediction
Oleksandr Usyk edged out Tyson Fury on a split decision when these heavyweights met for the undisputed championship in May and the two elite fighters will clash again in Riyadh on Saturday in a hugely anticipated rematch.
All the belts aren’t up for grabs this time as Usyk vacated the IBF strap, with Daniel Dubois the new holder. That doesn’t take anything away from the magnitude of the second instalment of this thrilling rivalry, however, as Fury now has a chance to avenge his first defeat and Usyk can back up that win and remove any doubts.
In terms of a winner, Usyk looks a worthy favourite as he showed he could cope with Fury last time and ultimately he found a way to negate the Gypsy King’s considerable physical advantages.
The odds about a win for the Ukrainian look a little short though so the best play here could be backing the fight not to go the distance, covering the possibility of either man producing a stoppage.
How the fight progresses will largely depend on Fury in the opening exchanges. The Briton is the bigger man and Usyk doesn’t have the option of just taking control of the centre of the ring and dictating the pace.
Against all of his previous opponents, Fury has been the fighter with the greater ringcraft or boxing IQ but that wasn't the case in May as he was outthought and outboxed by Usyk so he will switch his tactics on Saturday.
That should mean he tries to impose himself more physically as in the first fight his superior reach was the only one of his main advantages he really utilised. This time, Fury will probably try to tie Usyk up, use his weight to tire the smaller man and put more power into his shots rather than being happy to just land with jabs and the occasional combination.
That is a game plan that may work, but Usyk is a superb counter-puncher with an innate ability to set traps so if Fury does take a more aggressive and physical approach it could lead to a few more openings early on for either man.
Neither man has been stopped but the first meeting was the toughest fight either has ever been involved in. The second could be an even bigger challenge now both have a better idea of how to cause damage and both are heavy hitters, so the judges may not be required at the Kingdom Arena on Saturday.
Fury will probably enjoy the better of the opening rounds but Usyk’s stamina and movement could be key factors – the Ukrainian seems to be able to raise his levels further in the later rounds as his opponent begins to tire, and if Fury does put a lot into those early rounds Usyk will be able to carve open a chance or two as the fight moves towards the final bell.
The Gypsy King managed to use the ropes to stay upright in that incredible ninth round in the first meeting but may not be so lucky this time, especially if Usyk is able to engineer a similar chance a little earlier, so a small wager on a stoppage for the champion also appeals.
