Sunny Edwards vs Galal Yafai prediction

The biggest British flyweight fight for decades takes place on Saturday as former IBF champion Sunny Edwards takes on the unbeaten Galal Yafai in Birmingham.

Edwards lost his title to Jesse Rodriguez in a unification bout in December last year and Yafai was on the undercard.

Fast forward nearly 12 months and Edwards has fought once since, outpointing Adrian Curiel in Phoenix, while Yafai has claimed two stoppages to improve his record to 8-0 with six early finishes.

The stakes are huge as the winner will almost certainly earn a chance to become a world champion in 2025, with the interim WBC belt up for grabs.

There is a contrast in styles, as Yafai is the kind of fighter who likes to come forward and overwhelm his opponents with combinations, while Edwards is a technician with exceptional footwork, hand speed and movement.

The one blemish on Edwards’ career is that ninth round TKO loss to Rodriguez but his performance in that defeat - against one of the best active pound-for-pound fighters - suggests he should have too much class for an opponent like Yafai, who just doesn’t possess that level of skill or ringcraft.

Edwards has got all the tools to outbox 2020 Olympic gold medal winner Yafai and he probably won’t be too concerned if he is drawn into a firefight occasionally either, having shown a willingness to stand and trade with Rodriguez. Showtime has only claimed four stoppages in a 22-fight career so take him to win on points, potentially unanimously, as he continues his bid to become a two-time world champion.
