Sam Gilly vs Jack McGann prediction

Sam Gilley and Jack McGann clash for the Commonwealth and British super welterweight titles at York Hall on Friday, with the former a clear favourite.

Gilley has a record of 17-1 and comes into the bout seeking to extend a six-fight winning streak, while McGann is 10-1-1 and has been the busier of the two as this is his third fight of 2024.

This will be Gilley’s first fight of the year but he is a level above his opponent and the Magic Man was last seen outpointing Louis Greene a year ago. McGann suffered a first round KO to Greene back in March and responded well with a stoppage of his own against journeyman Lukasz Barabasz, but Gilley represents his toughest assignment to date.

Only three of McGann’s ten wins have come against opponents with winning records and he is in danger of being outclassed on Friday. However, Gilley is more of a technician than a huge puncher and two of his last three wins have come via decisions, he may also need a few rounds to tune up after a year out of the ring, so a win on points for the Walthamstow man looks a decent play.

The best bet comes in the chief support and the 5-0 Courtney Bennett can claim an early finish against Nick Webb. Bennett has stopped his last two opponents inside three rounds and should be able to overcome Webb, who has been out of the ring since losing in the first round to Fabio Wardley over three years ago.
