Gilberto Ramirez vs Chris Billam-Smith prediction

Chris Billam-Smith bids to become a unified cruiserweight world champion in Riyadh on Saturday night as he faces Mexican star Gilberto Ramirez.

Billam-Smith is the WBO title holder and Ramirez brings the WBA strap to the table, with the Briton a clear underdog in the betting.

This is undoubtedly The Gentleman’s toughest challenge to date as Ramirez boasts an impressive 46-1 record, with his solitary defeat coming at the hands of one of the best pound-for-pound active fighters in Dmitry Bivol.

However, CBS has consistently upset the odds over the last few years and there are a few reasons to think he could pull off another shock this weekend.

Ramirez was comprehensively outpointed by master technician Bivol and has fought twice since against reasonable, if not quite world level, opponents. Billam-Smith has been more active, dethroning the dangerous Lawrence Okolie to become the WBO king before a comeback stoppage win over the experienced Mateusz Masternak.

Saturday’s contest is on neutral territory but Billam-Smith is effectively the ‘away fighter’ as this is the headline clash on the Riyadh Season “Latino Night” card, featuring a number of boxers from the Golden Boy stable - including Ramirez.

Billam-Smith went on the road in his last bout to face Londoner Richard Riakporhe at Selhurst Park, dominating throughout to secure a unanimous win and avenge his only loss, so the pressure shouldn’t faze him here.

The biggest weapon in Billam-Smith’s arsenal is having a fantastic team around him and for his last few big fights the game plan has been spot on. He’s also an awkward and durable fighter with an incredible work-rate and he could well pick up the biggest victory of his career this weekend if he gets his tactics right.
