Took keen hold, in rear, headway 3rd, led with one circuit to go, clear 5th, much reduced lead after 4 out, headed 3 out, lost second and weakened 2 out (jockey said gelding ran too freely) (op 20/1 tchd 16/1)
In rear, outpaced and no chance before 3 out, slow jump 2 out, went modest fourth last, stayed on (jockey said, regarding running and riding, he was to take his time with an emphasis on getting the gelding relaxed and jumping; the early pace was strong, before steadying up through the middle stages, however they got racing again from the fourth last; he added he asked gelding to quicken down the side, he felt the response was limited and gelding was effectively staying on at the one-pace; gelding was novicey at the third-last, which he ballooned losing him ground and momentum, he wanted to keep the bit up in the gelding's mouth thereafter, however gelding produced a similarly inefficient jump at two out, again landing awkwardly; it was important for him to see a stride and ensure gelding produced a better jump at the last hurdle and from that point he rode the gelding out firmly and whilst staying on pleasingly, he did feel his finishing effort was flattered by the third-placed horse weakening in the final furlong, having made the running) (op 28/1)
