Tom Segal's play of the day at Chantilly

Ghostwriter

3.05 Chantilly

The British-trained runners didn't have too much luck in the first two French Classics of the season, but they went mighty close to winning them both with Dancing Gemini finishing runner-up in the Poulains and Kathmandu filling the same position in the Pouliches.

They were both relative outsiders so I'm not sure the French three-year-old crop is that strong and, for that reason, the Clive Cox-trained Ghostwriter looks to have an excellent chance of winning the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly (3.05).

Basically the 2,000 Guineas form at Newmarket could hardly have worked out any better so far with the second and third dominating the Irish Guineas and Inisherin dropping back in trip to win the Sandy Lane, so the fact Ghostwriter could run so well in fourth despite stumbling at the start was a big feather in his cap.

The question he has to answer is whether he will stay the extra two and half furlongs of the Jockey Club but, on running style and pedigree, there should be no problems on that score and he could have a class edge over the home team. The final piece of the jigsaw is his draw in stall two, because a low berth has often been crucial in this race.

Diego Velazquez will no doubt come on for his fourth in the Poulains and he is dangerous, but I don't think his form is anywhere near as good as Ghostwriter's and he's not well drawn either.
