Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Southwell
Sherlock
Kevin Ryan often runs his better young prospects at York and decided to throw Sherlock into the Convivial Maiden in August.
Sherlock struggled when 12th in Britain's richest maiden, but has entered handicaps off a low mark and can atone for his third-placed finish at Newcastle in the 7f nursery (5.30) at Southwell.
The selection was seriously strong in the betting for his handicap and all-weather debut after being gelded and travelled powerfully into the race. However, he didn't get the smoothest of passages up the outside and failed to find as much as expected off the bridle.
Sherlock wasn't given the hardest of times once his chance went, though, and merits huge respect off 1lb lower with that experience behind him. The fact his dam and brother recorded their wins on the all-weather suggests he can be at his best on the synthetics.
It's always worth heeding significant market support, and the money that was down last time can be recouped.
