Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Newmarket
Harbour Wind
We are going to see some stars over the next few days at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting and, who knows, potentially a future Melbourne Cup winner in Harbour Wind.
That is obviously a completely different sort of test to the small-field Jockey Club Roses Bowl Stakes, but he should be up to this one.
Dermot Weld has long mentioned Harbour Wind as a potential Flemington type, although he has ruled him out of a trip to Australia this November, and has brought him along beautifully. The four-year-old only made his debut last May and four months later almost landed the Prix Chaudenay on Arc weekend, staying on nicely into second behind one who got first run.
It looks as though Harbour Wind's 2024 campaign has revolved around the autumn. He has raced just twice this term and was given a 78-day break after his game success over an inadequate 1m4½f at Limerick in June before again finishing second at Longchamp on testing conditions this month.
The run in France will have brought him forward and I can't see any reason why he won't be up to defying a penalty in this company to build on impressive career form figures of 1211212.
His lightly raced, progressive profile makes him more appealing than Lonsdale Cup second Al Nayyir at the prices as Tom Clover's horse may have been flattered slightly at York, while Night Sparkle's improvement appears to have stalled and this is a big step up in class for three-year-old Fighter.
