Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Chepstow
Monbeg Genius
Monbeg Genius has been my long-term hope for the Welsh Grand National since November and I have seen nothing to make me turn away from that perception.
The market has not exactly missed him, but I can't recall a weaker Welsh National and Fontaine Collonges carrying top weight of 12st suggests as much.
That is not to criticise Fontaine Collonges, as she's been highly progressive and put my selection to the sword at Haydock last time, but she always goes well when fresh and would not be guaranteed to go on from that run, nor necessarily stay this extreme test.
Conversely, you get the impression Monbeg Genius will come forward a great deal for his comeback and his staying-on second represented a lovely trial. An extra five furlongs will bring out his abundant stamina, and frankly it is about time this eight-year-old picked up a major prize.
