Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Newcastle

Hawaii Five O

5.30 Newcastle

Hawaii Five O had no real right to go off such a short-priced favourite for his handicap debut at Yarmouth last time.

He was beaten by wide margins at huge odds on all three starts in novice or maiden company and shaped with minimal encouragement.

While the gamble failed to come off at Yarmouth, he is a strong fancy to break his duck in the 7f handicap at Newcastle (5.30) to prove the money wasn't misplaced.

Hawaii Five O hit a low of 1.2 in running on Betfair after leading for much of the way over the mile trip at the seaside course, but couldn't sustain his effort in the closing stages when fading into fourth.

Dropping him 2lb for that encouraging effort at a track that can favour those who are ridden with more restraint looks a generous piece of handicapping.

Admittedly, Newcastle can be similar to Yarmouth in that respect, but the selection won't have to last out for as long if setting the fractions once more, and the course has been a happy hunting ground for trainer Harry Charlton (career record of four winners from 11 runners).

The selection is bred to be precocious and significantly better than this grade. His dam competed in a couple of Group 1s at two, while his sire, Kameko, comfortably landed the rearranged Futurity Trophy at this track in 2019. Everything looks in place for a big run under Callum Rodriguez.
