Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Ayr

Spirit Of Acklam

2.50 Ayr

We haven't seen Spirit Of Acklam since he went off a 9-1 chance for the London Gold Cup in May, when it was clear he failed to give his true running for Mick and David Easterby.

The occasion clearly got to Spirit Of Acklam as he never settled and took a backwards step when fading into last of 13 there after three promising runs in novice company.

An eyecatcher when plugging on into seventh in the Convivial Maiden on his debut at two, the son of Cracksman broke his duck in a mile novice at Ayr next time, readily reversing York form with Sisyphean off level weights.

That horse is now rated 92, while the selection, who did nothing wrong when readily defying a penalty at Ripon in a decent time on his return, remains perched on a mark of 80.

I have little doubt he is better than that, and the fact his connections even threw him into a race as hot as the London Gold Cup for his handicap debut was telling.

That form of that race has again worked out strongly, with a stack of subsequent winners in behind the impressive King's Gambit, who has also gone on to better things himself. It is time for this lightly raced type to bolster that record further in a far weaker race.
