Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Ayr
Cheshire Dancer
Hugo Palmer must think a bit of Cheshire Dancer to have initially declared her for the Listed John Musker Stakes at Yarmouth on Wednesday as she is only rated 82.
She'd clearly have been up against it facing fillies who were rated upwards of 20lb higher than her in that, and Ayr's 1m2f handicap (4.15) on the first day of its Gold Cup meeting looks a much better fit. She should take the world of beating and resisting the urge to pinch some black type can pay dividends.
Cheshire Dancer has enjoyed a productive campaign for Palmer despite only winning once in six starts.
Even allowing for the fact the widest draw and a rough beginning did her no favours in a mile fillies' handicap at Glorious Goodwood two starts back, she had long been shaping as if longer distances were worth exploring, and she showed her appreciation for a greater test of stamina when sent off the well-backed favourite for a 1m2f Sandown handicap.
Although the gamble failed to come off, the selection notched a good Topspeed figure for the grade when pulling nearly five lengths clear of the third, and was simply unlucky to bump into a big William Haggas-trained improver with a top pedigree.
This race is weaker and the track is less demanding, so a 3lb rise looks lenient for a filly with more to give over ten furlongs.
