Richard Birch's play of the day at Windsor
Antiphon
7.40 Windsor
Antiphon has a real affinity for Windsor and can record a fourth course-and-distance success in the 5f handicap after a career-best performance in the Epsom Dash.
Although not quite as striking as the lack of people in the centre of the track on Derby day, the all-round speed which Antiphon demonstrated on the Surrey downs suggests he will be able to lay up comfortably with the early pace on his return to a venue where he has form figures of 114232212.
Jack Doughty’s 7lb claim means Antiphon receives a double-figure amount of weight from all nine rivals, and he should prove extremely difficult to beat. Admittedly, this is a stronger race than the Class 5 he won at Windsor in April by a neck from Mary Of Modena.
However, you can argue he is effectively 1lb lower when taking into account his apprentice’s allowance and, following that excellent Epsom run, Antiphon is clearly coming into the race in the form of his life.
The five-year-old acts well on good-to-firm ground and could be one of those sprinters who is improving with age.
