Richard Birch's play of the day at Redcar

Fast Fred

2.30 Redcar

The middle-distance bred Fast Fred has generally been a work in progress this year, but everything looks right for him to come to the boil to open his account in Redcar’s 1m2f handicap.

Fast Fred qualified for handicaps with two runs over 7f and one over a mile. He shaped with promise on all three occasions and took a step forward off an opening mark of 55 when a staying-on Redcar sixth of 14 behind Dandy’s Angel over 1m2f two starts ago.

He improved again on a return visit to the Cleveland track when third of 14 behind solid yardsticks for the grade, Isle Of Wolves and Roman Secret, in a 0-62.

Trainer Phillip Makin appears to have found his four-year-old a good opportunity in this 0-55 and Fast Fred is expected to take it. He clearly acts well with some give in the ground, likes Redcar and stays 1m2f well.
