Richard Birch's play of the day at Plumpton
Kalkas
1.28 Plumpton
Kalkas represents a small stable in terrific form and he can exploit a career-low mark to land Plumpton’s 2m3½f novice handicap chase.
The Billy Apprahamian-trained eight-year-old held an official rating of 120 during his time with previous trainer Henry de Bromhead.
He won a 2m Limerick maiden hurdle and finished second in a Leopardstown novice chase before moving yards.
Kalkas is now rated just 94 but showed he retained plenty of ability when a 33-1 second to Millies Mite, who made all off an uncontested lead, at Fontwell in April.
He ran to a similar level over the same course when third to Call Off The Dogs as 7-4 favourite next time out. Call Off The Dogs has since won two more Fontwell handicap chases, and Kalkas probably needs only to reproduce that form to get off the mark in Britain.
Kalkas attempted to make all on his last start, and it would be no surprise to see him string these rivals out all over East Sussex.
Ballinoulart could prove the biggest threat off his low weight, but the David Dennis-trained six-year-old has looked very slow in similar low-grade handicap chases at Warwick and Hereford recently and may struggle to reel in Kalkas.
