Phill Anderson's play of the day at Lingfield
Voltaic
Lingfield’s opener is a ‘Hands And Heels’ Apprentice Handicap and a rider who has made a bright start to her career is Alexandra McDonnell, who takes the ride on Voltaic.
He shaped as if he needed his return from a four-month break at Wolverhampton in November before racing too close to a hot pace back at that venue five days later, a race in which the first six home were positioned in midfield or held up before the leaders all faded.
However, there’s potential for an easy lead in this race in the absence of any out-and-out front-runners and it can often be an advantage to be on the pace over seven furlongs on Lingfield’s sharp all-weather track.
This eight-year-old showed he was still capable at this sort of level, winning back-to-back classified stakes races on turf in the summer, including a win over this trip at Leicester and his rider Alexandra McDonnell, who is 4-21 in 2024, is still able to claim 3lb in races confined to apprentices. Backing all her rides this year to £1 level stake would have yielded a £10 profit this year.
