Phill Anderson's play of the day at Kempton
Zero Carbon
7.00 Kempton
Zero Carbon was in good form on the all-weather last year, recording two wins over this course and distance, and he is only 2lb above his last winning mark despite some creditable efforts in defeat towards the end of 2023.
The gelding’s best performances have come when allowed to dictate the fractions on the front end and there is the potential for an uncontested lead here with no other confirmed front-runners in the nine-runner field.
Zero Carbon was a shade below form when beaten two and a quarter lengths on his last start over course and distance in November, but that race produced four next-time-out winners as well as two others who were beaten only a neck on their next outing.
Trainer Richard Hughes has enjoyed a remarkable few weeks with eight winners from 17 runners since March 19. Finley Marsh has ridden four of those winners and he knows Zero Carbon well having been on board for three of his four career wins.
Fitness is the main question after an absence of 157 days and Zero Carbon was below par on his first outing last year, but four of the yard’s recent winners were arriving on the back of a 97-day break or more, so there is a fair chance he will be ready to go. If he is fully tuned up, expect him to be hard to catch.
