Paul Kealy's play of the day at Salisbury
Under The Twilight
The fillies take centre stage at Salisbury's showcase meeting with the Group 3 Ire-Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes (3.50) the feature, but the best bet of the day may come in the following 6f Class 2 handicap (4.25).
This race features the first three home in a Glorious Goodwood handicap in July, with the early market fancying them in reverse order this time; third-placed Dance And Romance heading the first show ahead of runner-up Katey Kontent and winner Kitai.
With three-year-olds having won the last four runnings, you can certainly see the case for Dance And Romance, especially given she has run only four times in her life so has plenty of upside. But Katey Kontent has form figures of 142 at the course and has been running really well elsewhere all season.
However, when she last ran here she was beaten off levels by Under The Twilight, who was taking her course record to 111 and also makes her first visit since then and is 4lb better off.
The Michael Blake-trained six-year-old has more miles on the clock, of course, but she's far from a one-track pony, having won at Windsor earlier this season, and after a few defeats since she is back on the same mark.
Form figures since of 5769 suggest she has not been pulling up any trees, but she hasn't been disgraced in any of those starts and was actually quite eyecatching in the last two, both at Windsor, and particularly last time despite finishing only ninth of 16 to Elmonjed.
On that occasion Under The Twilight was twice stopped in her run yet was still beaten only three lengths by a horse who has since gone on to win a big handicap at York, and I have little doubt she's in fine enough heart to have a good crack at keeping that 100 per cent course record intact.
Incidentally, Under The Twilight's three successes at Salisbury came on good to firm, good to soft and soft ground, and her versatility on different surfaces may be handy given we have one of those annoying forecasts for heavy, potentially thundery showers that are going to be hit and miss around Britain.
