Paul Kealy's play of the day at Newmarket

Star Of Orion

6.50 Newmarket

There are plenty of horses with decent records at Newmarket in the Class 2 handicap over a mile there, including Dutch Decoy (3-4) and Darkness (2-3) but the pick of them on this occasion might well be Star Of Orion.

Having moved from Ralph Beckett to Eve Johnson Houghton (same owner) this season, he made an eyecatching reappearance at Goodwood when finishing in midfield after taking a bump at the start and then getting no run on the inside until it was much too late.

Sure to come on for that, Star Of Orion doesn't win very often, but all his successes have come at the Newmarket tracks, where he has finished in the first two on six of ten outings, and his best form is on the July course, where he has won twice.

He ran a stack of good races after winning easily here last July, finishing third in the International at Ascot, second to course specialist Rhoscolyn at Goodwood and fourth to Quinault back at Ascot. While he doesn't run at a mile very often, he was nearest at the finish over that trip on soft ground at York when third on his final run of the season.

All ground comes alike to him and he gets preference as he's by far the freshest horse in the field.
