Paul Kealy's play of the day at Ascot

Baradar

4.30 Ascot

The favourite and last year's winner Rohaan is well treated on old form in the 6f handicap, but he's not the only one and Baradar, who ran his best race for a while when fourth at Ripon last time, is preferred.

He doesn't have Rohaan's body of work at Ascot, but he was an unlucky-in-running sixth in last season's Victoria Cup before winning the International Handicap on King George day. He then followed up at Doncaster off a mark 6lb higher than he's running off now.

He has slid steadily down the ratings since for a reason, but that closing fourth at Ripon was a step in the right direction, and three of Baradar's last four successes have come from September onwards, so it could be that this is his time of year. The ground is certainly no issue as he's a four-time winner on soft or heavy.
