Keith Melrose's play the day at Kempton
Above
Above goes in the 6f handicap (6.30), and the eight-year-old has been showing enough of late to think he can come good off a career-low mark of 72.
Above has always been at the top of his game on the all-weather, and ran the best race of his life over this course and distance four years ago. He showed flashes during a winless summer in 2024, while suggesting that sticking at 6f is the way to go these days.
That only makes his run at Southwell last time all the more attractive. Above missed the start over 5f that day, a misdemeanour which equals certain defeat at that Midlands venue, in particular, before running on well to take third on what was his second run back after a break.
Now with conditions just right, he may be underestimated. While a draw in stall 11 is not ideal, the stats show the market often overcompensates for those pitched wide over 6f at Kempton.
